“It’s amazing how people think insisting harder will somehow make a luxury suite appear.”
Patricia gestured toward the entrance.
“You’ll probably have better luck at one of the economy hotels outside the city.”
Ethan met her eyes without raising his voice.
Neither woman had any idea who they were speaking to.
The Grand Regent was one of seven flagship hotels Ethan had spent more than a decade building from the ground up—years before illness claimed his wife and left him raising Lily on his own.
He never announced his visits in advance.
He deliberately dressed like an ordinary traveler because financial reports revealed profits, but anonymous visits revealed character.
“May I speak with the general manager?” he asked.
Patricia’s expression immediately hardened.
“He’s busy,” she replied. “I’m not interrupting him over a reservation you can’t even prove exists.”
Just then, a housekeeper stepped out of a nearby service hallway carrying a stack of freshly folded white towels.
H er name tag read Lupita.
She noticed the sleeping child, the wilted flowers, Ethan’s exhausted face, and the tense atmosphere at the front desk in a single glance.
Setting the towels aside, she approached with genuine concern.
“Sir,” she asked gently, “is everything alright?”
“My reservation doesn’t seem to be showing up.”
Lupita turned toward Patricia.
“Did you search the executive corporate reservation system?”
“I already checked,” Patricia answered impatiently.
“The secondary corporate screen,” Lupita suggested calmly. “Executive bookings sometimes don’t appear in the primary system right away.”
Karla rolled her eyes.
“Lupita, stick to housekeeping. This isn’t your department.”
Lupita remained perfectly composed.
“Maybe not,” she said. “But when I see a tired father standing here with a sleeping little girl and no one willing to help him, it becomes my concern.”
With visible irritation, Patricia opened another reservation screen and typed a few more keys.
Four seconds later…
The color drained from her face.
“There it is,” she whispered.
“Suite 904.”
“Executive corporate reservation.”
“Confirmed two weeks ago.”
Silence swept across the front desk.
Every trace of confidence vanished.
In that instant, they realized they had just dismissed one of the hotel’s most important guests as though he didn’t belong.
What they still didn’t know…
Was that Ethan Vance wasn’t simply checking into the Grand Regent.
He was the man who owned every floor, every room, and every brick of the hotel.
