The camera lens is an incredible tool for capturing beautiful memories, but it does not view the world the exact same way the human eye does. Our eyes work in tandem with our brain to create a fully dimensional, three-dimensional understanding of our surroundings. A camera, on the other hand, flattens a three-dimensional environment into a single, flat, two-dimensional plane.
When Backgrounds and Foregrounds Collide
Because a photograph lacks true physical depth, objects that are positioned far apart in reality can look like they are directly touching or overlapping in a picture. A classic example of this is when a tree branch in the deep background appears to be growing straight out of someone’s head in the foreground. In a casual setting, these forced perspectives are simply funny accidents. However, if a spouse sends a photo where a background object resembles an unidentifiable figure, a hidden shadow, or a piece of clothing that doesn’t belong, it can easily spark confusion on the other end of the line.
