Half a second later, my husband Ryan’s voice turned bright and casual, like someone flipping a switch.
“Oh—hey, honey! We were just talking about her school project.”
My daughter jumped in too fast.
“Yeah. I need a poster board for science tomorrow.”
They both smiled at me.

Why couldn’t I know it?
The next afternoon, right after school, my husband grabbed his keys.
“We’re gonna run out for that poster board,” he said easily. “Maybe pick up pizza too.”
My daughter slipped on her trainers without looking at me.
I waited until their car backed out of the driveway.
Then I grabbed my own keys.
I told myself I was being ridiculous… until he didn’t drive toward Target.
He turned the other way.
And ten minutes later, their brake lights lit up in front of the one place no one goes for poster board.

I OVERHEARD MY 16-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER TELL HER STEPDAD, “MOM DOESN’T KNOW THE TRUTH… AND SHE CAN’T FIND OUT” — SO I FOLLOWED THEM THE NEXT AFTERNOON.
