For the first time in weeks, I laughed.
But as the plane climbed higher, I began noticing people staring at him. A student raised his phone as if he were taking pictures of the clouds, though the camera was aimed directly at our row. Other passengers whispered while examining Marcus’s face.
Marcus noticed it too.
“Could I ask you for an unusual favour?” he whispered.
“How unusual?”
He glanced toward the phone across the aisle.
“Would you pretend to fall asleep on my shoulder? If they think I’m travelling with my family, they might stop recording.”
I stared at him.
“You’re serious?”
“Unfortunately. You can say no.”
Clara was already sleeping in my arms. I knew exactly what it was like to wish you could disappear from everyone else’s judgement.
“All right,” I said. “But if Clara wakes up and attacks you with that stuffed lamb, you were warned.”
“I accept the risk.”
I gently rested my head against his shoulder. Marcus remained perfectly still, his hands clearly visible as he kept a respectful distance.
Across the aisle, someone whispered, “He’s with his wife and daughter.”
Slowly, the phones began to lower.
I had intended only to pretend, but the calm steadiness of his shoulder reminded me just how long I had spent waiting for criticism. For a few quiet minutes, nobody expected me to explain myself.
When the plane landed, Marcus opened my stroller and carried one of my suitcases down for me.
Then he looked at his phone, and his expression changed.
“Someone has already posted a photograph of us.”
“Who are you?”
“I’m a senior commander in the United States Coast Guard,” he explained. “I recently testified about failures in support programmes for military families. It attracted more attention than I expected.”
Two formally dressed men walked toward him.
Marcus gave me a card.
“If anyone contacts you or shares Clara’s image, call my office. You did not agree to become part of this.”
Then the men escorted him away.
I remained beside the stroller, convinced the strangest hour of my life had finally ended.
I was wrong.
That evening, after Sarah welcomed us into her house, I looked at my phone.
Nineteen notifications were waiting.
The photograph captured me leaning against Marcus while Clara slept between us. Its caption claimed the decorated Coast Guard commander had secretly been travelling with his wife and child.
Jason had already reposted it.
He accused me of bringing our daughter around a powerful stranger immediately after our divorce.
Then he declared that his attorney would take action.
