I almost ignored it. Then something made me answer.
“Lauren,” he said, voice tense. “I’m sorry to call, but you need to know something.”
My chest tightened. “What now?”
“I gave my full statement. Afterward, Nick’s brother cornered me in the parking lot. He said if I kept talking, everyone would find out who really sent the messages to Evan.”
I frowned. “What messages?”
“The ones about you not being good enough,” Ryan said. “Lauren, those words Evan said in your kitchen? They didn’t start with the guys.”
Rain streaked down the glass beside me.
“Who started them?”
Ryan hesitated.
Then he said, “They came from an anonymous number Evan had been texting for weeks. Whoever it was knew things about your marriage, your job, your routines. And there’s something else.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?”
“I saw the contact name once on Evan’s screen,” Ryan whispered. “He saved it as L’s Friend.”
The sidewalk seemed to tilt beneath me.
Naomi was the first name that came to mind, and I hated myself for it.
But before I could speak, Ryan continued.
“Lauren, whoever it is sent one last message after the crash.”
“What did it say?”
His voice dropped.
“It said, ‘She’ll leave him now. Phase one worked.’”
