## Part 2

For the first time in years, I did not move.

I had hidden beneath cars while men searched for me with guns. I had stood in rooms where one wrong word could turn a handshake into a funeral. I had listened to liars, traitors, debtors, killers, and men who begged with dry eyes because they still believed pride could save them.

But hearing my wife whisper from above me broke through every layer of control I had built.

“Please… stop,” Grace said again.

Then came another sound.

Not a man’s voice.

A phone vibrating against wood.

The mattress shifted. Grace stood. Her bare feet crossed the carpet, and I watched her shadow bend as she picked something up from the floor.

She answered without speaking.

For several seconds, there was only her breathing.

Then a voice came through the speaker, low and distorted, as if dragged through metal.

“Did you find it?”

Grace swallowed. “No.”

“You had two days.”

“I looked where you told me to look. There’s nothing behind the wedding photo.”

My blood went cold.

The wedding photo.

It hung in our bedroom, framed in silver, taken on the one day in my life when I had allowed myself to believe I could stand in sunlight and not bring darkness with me. Behind that photograph was a wall safe that only three people alive knew existed.

I was one of them.
